Maintenance Task:  Clean and inspect exhaust fan ports

How do you clean and inspect exhaust fan ports?

Clean both the inlet and the outlet of the exhaust system using a mild detergent.  Oil the louvers or flaps so that they operate freely.

Inspect for:

  • Louvers or flaps that stick

  • Any missing pieces

  • Insect nests

Repair as necessary.

Why is it important to clean and inspect exhaust fan ports?

Sticking louvers or flaps allow for loss of heating or cooling, which increases your energy bills.  It also allows an opening for insects.

How often should you clean and inspect exhaust fan ports?
Clean and inspect exhaust fan ports annually (May).

How does Home-Wizard rate the costs and benefits for this task?
The cost of this task is relatively low.  It is estimated that this task should only take about an hour to complete depending on how many exhaust fan vents that you have, and where they are located when they exit your home.  You will need some mild detergent and light lubricating oil.

The benefits of this task are relatively high.  Doing this task can help prevent serious damage by pests, including termites, which can be very costly to eliminate and repair damage from.

Overall Home-Wizard benefit-versus-cost rating (one 'hat' = low and four 'hats' = high)
