Emergency Supplies

To help maintain the safety of your home, it is important that your home maintenance program include the proper maintenance for your home's emergency supplies.

Emergency supplies are the provisions that you want to be sure to have on hand in case of a natural disaster, power outage, etc.  Typical emergency supplies include:  jugs of fresh water, canned food, batteries, flashlights, candles, first aid kit, water purification tablets, manual can opener, matches, aspirin, IPECAC syrup, battery-operated radio etc.

Shown in the "Maintenance" tab above are the recommended routine maintenance tasks for your emergency supplies. The "Questions / Answers" tab above shows our answers to related questions. And the "Articles" tab above provides links to related informational articles and sources.

Maintenance Task:  Rotate supplies of batteries, water and food

How do you rotate emergency supplies of batteries, water and food?

You should keep emergency supplies in a location that you can readily find them in an emergency.  Example places include in a designated box or shelf in a closet.  Emergency supplies that you should consider keeping in this box or shelf include: batteries, jugs of water, and canned food.

Why is it important to rotate emergency supplies of batteries, water and food?

These items are perishable, and should be replaced from time to time to ensure that you have fresh supplies.

How often should you rotate emergency supplies of batteries, water and food?
These supplies should be replaced twice a year, once in September before bad winter weather, and then again in March.
