Charity Donation Reminders

U.S. federal tax laws allow for charity donations to be deducted from personal taxes each year.  Agencies such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. welcome charity donations of cars and household goods, which provide jobs for people to rehabilitate the items, and prepare them for use or sale to those less fortunate.  See also:  Tax Assessment.

Shown below are the recommended routine maintenance tasks related to charity donations.

Maintenance Task:  Evaluate household goods for charity donations

How do you evaluate household goods for charity donations?

Donations can include household goods, clothing, lawn care equipment, electrical appliances, white goods (e.g., washers, dryers, refrigerators), etc.  The items should be in good condition, or be able to be repaired.  Most agencies will not receive items that are beyond repair.  Remember to get a receipt for your donation.

Why is it important to evaluate household goods for charity donations?

Donating these household goods provides you with several benefits:

  • tax deduction

  • satisfaction of helping those less fortunate

  • creates more usable room in your home.

How often should you evaluate household goods for charity donations?
We recommend that you look for items to donate once a year in October, to enable completing the donation during the current tax year.

How does Home-Wizard rate the costs and benefits for this task?
The cost of this task is very moderate, depending on how many items you have to donate, and how easy or difficult it is for you to gather these items together.

The benefits of this task are moderately high, depending on how many items you have to donate.

Overall Home-Wizard benefit-versus-cost rating (one 'hat' = low and four 'hats' = high)
