Electronic Air Cleaner Maintenance

To maintain the efficiency, safety, and useful life of your electronic air cleaner, it is important that your home maintenance program include the proper maintenance for your electronic air cleaner.

Electronic air cleaners electrically remove dust particles, smoke, pollen, etc. from the air and improves your home health.  Most electronic air cleaners remove 95% of the particulates in the air versus a standard furnace or air conditioning air filter which only removes about 10%.  Electronic air cleaners come in two types:  self-contained units for individual rooms, and central systems which are installed as part of the central air distribution system.  Electronic air cleaners make room cleaning easier and less frequent, help improve inside air quality, and help to provide relief to allergy sufferers.  See also:  Forced-Air Heating System and Central Air Conditioning.

Shown below are the recommended routine maintenance tasks for your electronic air cleaner.

 Maintenance Task:  Clean collector plates

How do you clean collector plates of an electronic air cleaner?

According to your manufacturer's recommendations, slide out collector plates and wash them, allow to dry, and replace them back into the unit.  If you can't find your manufacturer's instructions, you might try doing a search on the Internet to find them.

Why is it important to clean collector plates of an electronic air cleaner?

Cleaning the collector plates helps the electronic air cleaner to maintain its operating performance.  Also, plugged collector plates cause the central air fan to work harder which consumes more energy.

How often should you clean collector plates of an electronic air cleaner?
The collector plates should be cleaned every 3 months (February, May, August, November).

How does Home-Wizard rate the costs and benefits for this task?
The cost of this task is very low.  It is estimated that this task should only take about 30 minutes to complete, and the task is relatively easy to do.  No specialized tools are required.

The benefits of this task are moderately high, as dirty collector plates will cause your air cleaner to work less effectively.  If people in your house have respiratory problems, then this task becomes more important.

Overall Home-Wizard benefit-versus-cost rating (one 'hat' = low and four 'hats' = high)
