Outside Lighting Maintenance

To maintain the effectiveness of your outside lighting and to avoid having to change outside lights during the cold winter months, it is important that your home maintenance program include the proper maintenance for your outside lighting.

Changing outside lighting becomes more difficult during bad winter weather, so it should be checked prior to the winter.  See also: Holiday Lighting.

Shown below are the recommended routine maintenance tasks for your outside lighting.

Maintenance Task:  Inspect, clean and replace bulbs

How do you inspect, clean and replace outside lighting fixtures?

Turn outside lights on, inspect each fixture, and clean as needed.  If any bulbs are burnt out, then replace them.  Be sure to not exceed the wattage rating recommended for the lighting fixture (usually printed on the fixture).

Why is it important to inspect, clean and replace outside lighting fixtures?

Reduces risk of having to replace bulbs in bad weather.  Ensures the safety and beauty that your outside lighting is intended to have.

How often should you inspect, clean and replace outside lighting fixtures?
Perform annually before bad weather arrives (September).

How does Home-Wizard rate the costs and benefits for this task?
The cost of this task is low, depending on how many outside lighting fixtures that you have.  You will need to purchase the appropriate bulbs for your fixtures.

The benefits of this task are relatively high for two reasons: 1) maintains the safety and beauty of your home; and doing the task in September avoids having to do this job during the cold winter months.

Overall Home-Wizard benefit-versus-cost rating (one 'hat' = low and four 'hats' = high)
