Large Trees Nearby

To maintain the safety of your home from trees, it is important that your home maintenance program include the proper maintenance for your trees.

Trees enhance your property and can provide shade which reduces energy costs. They should be inspected periodically to ensure that falling branches won't damage property or utility lines (power, telephone, cable).  See also: Lawn Care.

Shown below are the recommended routine maintenance tasks for your trees.

Maintenance Task:  Inspect trees which could hit home or buildings

How do you inspect trees which could hit home or buildings?

Trees near your home or shed buildings on your property should be inspected and maintained as follows:

  1. Larger branches which could break or fall and hit your home or utility lines, should be removed.

  2. Tree trunks which are leaning or showing evidence of disease or decay, should be cut down.

  3. Trees with two trunks that form a sharp "V" at the base, should have the trunks cabled together to provide increased strength.

Why is it important to inspect trees which could hit home or buildings?

Safety.  Large tree branches, or the entire tree can fall and do serious damage to property or utility lines.

How often should you inspect trees which could hit home or buildings?
Trees should be inspected annually before the winter storm season (September) before they loose their leaves (which makes it easier to detect dead branches).

How does Home-Wizard rate the costs and benefits for this task?
The cost of this task is very low (for doing the inspection), but the cost of removing tree limbs, dead trees, etc. will depend on what you find.

The benefits of this task can be moderately high, as it helps to prevent damage to your home, car, landscaping, etc.

Overall Home-Wizard benefit-versus-cost rating (one 'hat' = low and four 'hats' = high)
