Roof Gutters

To maintain the effectiveness and useful life of your roof gutters, it is important that your home maintenance program include the proper maintenance for your roof gutters.

The purpose of roof gutters is to prevent rain water from draining or accumulating near the foundation of the house or building.  Soaking the soil near the foundation can cause foundation walls to settle, basement walls to bulge, and water pressure can even begin to leak water through the basement walls.  See also:  Roof and Attics.

Shown in the "Maintenance" tab above are the recommended routine maintenance tasks for your roof gutters. The "Questions / Answers" tab above shows our answers to related questions. And the "Articles" tab above provides links to related informational articles and sources.

Maintenance Task:  Clean and inspect gutter, downspouts and splashpans

How do you clean and inspect roof gutters, downspouts, and splash pans?

Roof gutters require the following seven maintenance tasks:

  1. Remove debris form the gutters: leaves, sticks, sludge, etc. should be scooped out of the gutters with a gloved hand or a garden trowel.  Do not try to remove the debris with a garden hose, because pushing the debris into the downspouts can cause them to plug.  NOTE: Do not lean your ladder against the gutters, as they can easily bend or break.

  2. Flush gutters: Once the debris has been removed, flush the gutters with water from a garden hose to remove any remaining dirt or materials.

  3. Clean downspouts: To clean the downspouts, turn on garden hose full blast, and place it down into downspout openings.  If badly blocked, a wire plumber's "snake" can be used to dislodge the debris.

  4. Inspect gutters for leaks: Inspect the seams, end-caps, and any rusted areas for leaks.  Repair as required with silicon sealer or patching materials.

  5. Inspect supports and slope of gutters:  While water is still in gutter after flushing, check gutters for drainage.  If water forms pools inside the gutters, then it does not have the proper drainage slope.  Gutters should be sloped about one vertical inch for every 15-20 horizontal feet.  Adjust hangers to achieve the necessary slope to drain water to the drain spouts.  Also inspect the gutter hangers and replace ones that are damages or loose.

  6. Check inside gutter coating: Protective compounds applied to the inside of the gutters can help significantly extend its useful life.  Aluminum or copper can be coated with roof coating or spar varnish.  Tin or carbonized metal can be coated with liquid roof coating, and wood gutters can be coated with linseed oil.

  7. Check positions of splash pans: Splash pans are the concrete or plastic pans at the bottom of the downspouts which direct the water away from the foundation of the house or building.  It is very important that these splash pans direct water at least 2-3 feet away from the foundation.  Since these splash pans get shifted over time, they should be checked to be sure that the downspouts are directed properly into the splash pans, and the splash pans are oriented properly to drain the water away.

Why is it important to clean and inspect roof gutters, downspouts, and splash pans?

Proper roof gutter maintenance can help protect the foundation and basement of your house and extend your gutters' useful life.

How often should you clean and inspect roof gutters, downspouts, and splash pans?
Roof gutters should be cleaned and inspected twice per year in the late fall (November) and late spring (May).

How does Home-Wizard rate the costs and benefits for this task?
The cost of this task is moderately high.  It can be very time consuming and dangerous to do yourself, especially if your house has a second story.  You probably want to hire a professional service to do the gutter cleaning portion of this task, if you can't easily access your gutters from a stable ladder.

The benefits of this task are high.  Maintaining your gutters, downspouts and splashpans are essential for protecting your foundation from allowing water damage to your home.

Overall Home-Wizard benefit-versus-cost rating (one 'hat' = low and four 'hats' = high)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS from "Ask-a-Wizard":

QUESTION from woman on 10/14/2008
The back half of my roof is large and has a pronounced slope. Is there anything in particular I should do or know about when replacing the gutters? (Our current gutters are not able to handle the quantity of water shed, but that could be due to how old they are.)

ANSWER FROM HOME-WIZARD.COM on 10/14/2008

Dear "woman":

If your current gutters are not able to handle the quantity or rainwater coming off of your roof, then yes there are a number of re-design considerations that you should consider, such as location of downspouts, size of the gutters, and also, where the gutters are placed relative to the edge of your roof (which may require padding out your fascia boards).

Here is a webpage which describes these design issues, which I think you will help you:

Hope this helpful.
